Achim Steiner was elected in 2006 as the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Previously he worked for various regional environmental groups then served as Director General of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), one of the world’s largest nature conservation organizations.
In 2009 UNEP published the GREEN ECONOMY REPORT, a plan outlining concrete steps to make the world economy more sustainable. The report met with much criticism from the environmental protection movement.
Steiner, however, believes that we can no longer afford to have a radical restructuring of our economics and way of life blocked by intransigent, abstract policy discussions.
