Scilla Elworthy is the founder of the OXFORD RESEARCH GROUP, an early think tank promoting sustainable security in the world, and the founder of PEACE DIRECT, an NGO that supports the work of local peace-builders in conflict areas. Along with Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu she co-founded of THE ELDERS organization. She is a member of the WORLD FUTURE COUNCIL.

During the Cold War era she arranged secret meetings between politicians, military leaders, arms managers from East and West, and anti-nuclear activists so that open dialogue in a personal context could increase the willingness for non-violent solutions. These meetings contributed to bringing about some of the most important disarmament treaties.

In recognition of her work she has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times.
