Gro Harlem Brundtland is a Norwegian politician, diplomat and doctor, as well as an international leader in sustainable development and public health.
She was formerly Environment Minister and served three terms as Prime Minister of Norway, and between 1981 and 1992 she was the first female leader of the Social Democratic Party in Norway.
From 1998 to 2003 she was Director General of the World Health Organization, and today she is a Special Envoy on Climate Change at the United Nations.
As chair of the World Commission on Environment and Development at the UN (also known as the Brundtland Commission) she developed the first fundamental definition of global sustainability.
Published in April 1987, the commission’s report “Our Common Future” provided the momentum for the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The Brundtland Commission also provided momentum for Agenda 21, the UN action plan on sustainable development.
